Since 2006, Kingston WritersFest has celebrated the art of writing… and reading! Through the years, the festival has evolved exponentially. Supported by a small marketing team and a corps of dedicated volunteers, the festival now welcomes an audience of 6,000 to more than 50 events featuring some 70 authors from around the world. It is hailed as one of the best festivals in the country, renowned for its unique programming and the intimate atmosphere within which its community of readers and writers engage in a lifelong love of literature.

Since 2015, we at Amplify have been proud to provide a full spectrum of brand marketing, advertising, promotional, PR, social media and digital support for KWF’s uniquely themed annual Fall event. Support materials include a detailed event program, posters, and a host of promotional materials required for such a multi-layered, multi-venue event.

We create each annual theme to reflect the core brand proposition which we initially developed in 2015 as the result of an intensive discovery process. A new KWF brand emerged from that close collaboration with the client, informed by a key strategic insight; that the brand needed to be ‘Elevated’ by celebrating the ‘Art’ of writing, but do so in a welcoming and unifying way. Creative needed to rally KWF’s largely female audiences with the intimacy of a ‘girls’ weekend getaway,’ a special destination for sharing and celebration. Each annual creative theme also needed to be shaped by the context of shifting social precepts and emotions, much as were the works produced by the festival’s featured writers themselves.

From that initial discovery session, we also spear-headed a dynamic website and digital media platform, and developed the process plan required to support that effort. This shift to online has fostered a true sense of community for KWF with its target audiences, and opened up exciting avenues for new marketing initiatives.

Results

Since 2015, annual marketing conversion of targeted visitor reach potential has been significant. With enhanced digital strategic efforts, 2022 heralded KWF’s best results yet, with stronger audience diversity:

  • a 33% increase in first-time attendees (usually on average +18%)
  • a 13% jump in the 36-45 age demo (usually on average +7.5 %)
  • a 4.7% increase in the 26-35 age demo (usually on average +1.7%)
